Abstract

Popcorn-based Insulation

project report

In the context of climate change and its effects, the need for energy efficient buildings based on environmentally friendly materials is a challenge occupying researchers, the construction industry as well as politics. Careful and environmentally friendly use of materials and energy has become more important than ever and renewable energy plays an increasingly important role. My idea is to replace polymers used in building insulation materials with popcorn. My experiments with popcorn show that this tasty snack is also a good insulation material that can compete with polystyrene. I used cuboids to simulate buildings and tested how well and how long my popcorn insulation can maintain a stable internal temperature. I conclude that popcorn is suitable as an environmentally friendly insulation material. I see room for further optimisation with regard to fabrication of popcorn insulation.
